As the undeniably brilliant Men at Work once penned… I said to the man, “Are you trying to tempt me, Because I come from the land of plenty?” Well, it would seem Australian citizens are asking the same thing today as the online gambling industry is increasing casting its’ longing gaze (and marketing messages) in the direction of Australia… All this despite the legal concerns that have surrounded the county and online gambling with the 2001 IGA…
Where there’s a will there’s a way and the marketing and PR arms of the giant online gambling firms are running into overdrive hoping to get a piece of the Aussie gambling market.
It cannot have escaped your attention that we just had the Aussie Millions here again, another millionaire created and another wave of excitement swoops the county and yet all this in a country in which ‘interactive gambling’ is supposed to be illegal?
If you want a full explanation of the legal situation in Australian gaming – read the recent blog post in this section.
Of course, in reality this is not the case, the big boys have always found way of getting round the ‘no advertising’ laws for a long time, whether it be through advertising their .net sites, sponsorship of grass routes poker events or ludicrous PR stunts (see the ‘extreme poker’ event that took place over a Sydney cliff face in 2008!).
Indeed Greg Tingle, who works in the gaming media space says the number of calls he’s getting from the big names in gaming in increasing all the time:
“We’ve secured deals with PKR, Virgin Games, Betfair, Party Poker, Jackpot City and more just keep coming through – there will be even more poker and casino rooms looking to get into the Australian market in the near future…”
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Australia is well and truly gambling online…
