The US shut off online gambling in there country in 2006. All the huge publicly traded companies such as Party Casino, InterCasino, Ladbrokes etc, etc all had to pull out. It was left to rouge operators such as Poker Stars and Full Tilt to clean up, take the risks and dominate the US market.
The owners of these companies would never be able to go to the US (no real loss in my opinion – US is just a very bad, bad version of Australia) and could console themselves with the knowledge that they had millions in the bank!
Effectively all this law served to do was drive online gamblers underground, leave them unprotected against rouge operators and leave the US tax payer out of pocket. However there is fresh hope this week with a new bill being put before the US senate.
If it gets pushed through it could lead to the regulation of online gambling in the states and if that happens the likely hood Australia and others will follow suit and introduce long over-due regulation – as has been the case in much of Europe for the past few years.
