The Tewantin-Noosa RSL in Queensland already operates 130 pokie machines, but in July 2009 they made an application for 46 extra machines.
The application is expected to take around two years to complete, so the club must play a waiting game for the time being.
Two years ago Queensland announced that the number of pokie machines in the state would not change. Therefore, in order for the Tewantin-Noosa RSL application to be successful other clubs must close, or be offering fewer gaming machines.
Queensland Government statistics show that in the 6 months to February 2010, around $66 million was placed in the 3501 machines.
There are about 330,000 people living in the region, so that would be $200 for each and every person in Queensland. There are, of course, many tourists visiting the area so they must account for some of the business too.
The pokie machines show a profit of around $400 a month, so with nearly 180 machines, Tewantin-Noosa RSL would be turning over $860,000 annually.
The added profits from the machines would not only benefit the RSL, but also the community. However, for the time being things will remain just as they are.
