Online gambling tax havens

Although online gambling operations are not illegal in the UK as they are here in Australia, most online casinos have opted to use tax havens such as Gibraltar as their base.
In the UK there is a 15% betting tax on gross profits and no companies like paying tax, gambling companies being no exception.  This tax has become a hot topic because of the growth in online and telephone betting
So the latest operation to move from the UK to Gibraltar is the well known world-wide company, William Hill.  It is moving its telephone betting business  in order to avoid the 15% tax.  William Hill has long been established in Gibraltar where it operates its online gambling section.
It seems that is is difficult to stop the exodus of online gambling businesses as it is such a global market.
It would be unlikely for the the UK to take the same route as America and Australia and simply ban online gambling by making it illegal.
UK betting was opened up as long ago as 1961, when off-course betting was legalised. Up until then anyone wanting to make a bet had to go to a racecourse.
How things have changed since computers and mobile phones became part of most people’s everyday lives.
All the online gambling done in Australia has to be conducted with offshore casinos, and they can be operating from anywhere in the world that allows online gambling within their shores.
