Survey suggests more Aussie men gamble online than women

A survey of Australian online gambling has been undertaken by the University of Sydney and Southern Cross University.

Anyone over the age of 18 who had bet money online was able to take part in the survey.  It is hoped that the results of the survey, which have recently been published, will help researchers to look more closely at any issues connected to internet gambling.

Somewhat surprisingly it seems that 92% of Australians who gamble online are men.  This goes against previous findings which suggested that a growing number of women were enjoying the convenience of gambling from home.

The most likely age group to gamble online is the 35 to 49 year olds, with the least likely to be the 18 to 24 age groups.

Most people who use the internet to gamble state the convenience of it to be their main reason for using this method.  A large percentage liked not having to leave their home, many liked the 24 hour availability of the internet. Around 35% said that they preferred not having to deal with the crowds associated with land-based gambling and a third said that they enjoyed the anonymity of online gambling.

However, there were some disadvantages to online gambling which came out in the survey, the main one being that it is maybe too convenient, and might therefore lead to problems.

It is hoped that these findings will lead researchers to look more closely at online casinos and online betting so that the phenomenon of online gambling can be understood more fully.
