Multi-Terminal Betting Approved at Casino Canberra

Casino Canberra has been making some big changes to the ACT gambling market. First, the venue was permitted to install 200 pokies, which marks the first-ever time that gaming machines have been installed outside of clubs in the state. Now, Casino Canberra has gained approval for the installation of multi-terminal gaming machines, in a reversal of long-standing gambling laws.

Casino Canberra will be able to operate up to 50 multi-terminal games, which includes semi-automated Rapid Roulette along with a number of other table games. The games are monitored by a member of staff, who oversees the wagering of all players. However, responsible gambling advocates are still concerned about having any type of automated table games at the casino.

“While these recent changes refer to semi-automated games, which still involve oversight from one staff member across a number of machines, I would be concerned if the casino was moving to automate more and more machines,” says Charles Livingstone, a gambling researcher at Monash University.

Executives at Casino Canberra argue that the inclusion of pokies and gaming machines will help to attract more high roller visitors. However, Livingstone refutes that claim, as high rollers are more likely to play traditional games.

“They’re certainly not the kind of thing that’s going to attract your high-rollers and exotic gamblers,” he says “James Packer is not going to drop into Canberra Casino in his Aston Martin and play automated table games”.

The inclusion of gaming machines at Casino Canberra continues to be a point of contention across the ACT. We will keep you posted with further updates as other gaming industry professionals voice their opinions on the matter.
