Online gambling continues to thrive in spite of a world wide recession, and whilst revenue from land based pokies decreases, online pokies are becoming more popular than ever.

In South Australia there is concern that these trends are diverting tax revenue from the Government.

This year has seen a tax revenue drop from $292 million to $282 million.  This is a significant drop in terms of money available to the South Australian Government for essential services.

Some of the drop in revenue from pubs and clubs is probably due to the smoking ban, as well as people playing online instead of in land based premises.

There is also a great deal of competition from sports betting, putting further pressure on the clubs, pubs and casinos.

The online casinos have been investing heavily in advertising campaigns, and this has persuaded many people to try internet gambling.  Internet gaming avoids traditional tax regulations.

Some views expressed in South Australia state that the decline in use of pokies could be due to the global financial crisis and reduced household incomes, but this contradicts the rise in internet gambling.

Most people feel that online gambling and gaming is here to stay in Australia, and that it will continue to grow.

There has been a recent study into the online gambling habits of the sexes, and it seems to show that women are using the internet for online gaming and gambling more then ever before.

Although slightly behind men in overall internet use, once they are introduced to online activities, women over 55, for example, will spend around three and a half hours a month playing online games.

Women will also spend much longer on online activites such as social networking, instant messaging, emails and shopping.

So whilst the general use of the internet is increasing, the amount of time women spend on gambling websites is also growing substantially.

It appears that as the internet has grown and accessibility has become easier, women are exhibiting behaviours that are surprisingly similar to men.

It is unclear where this latest study of internet habits was conducted, but it is likely that behaviours in countries like Australia, where women have total freedom, will be very similar.  So, it is fairly safe to say that Australian women will be using the internet to access gambling websites and online casinos in increasing numbers.
