Tattersall’s, the Australian gambling colossus, insists that pokies are
not addictive and is pushing for more machines in Victoria.
Frank Makryllos told a parliamentary inquiry that Victoria could go over the
current limit of 30,000 comfortably, despite the fact that Aussies lose over $
8 million a day on poker machines.
Makryllos argued that the slot machines are simply a form of entertainment and
nothing to worry about – he also stated that any increase would simply be in
line with the population increase in the area.
John Lenders the Victorian treasurer ruled out the move, saying that, “Of
course the company that makes money from the pokies wants to have more, but the
Government’s position is very clear”
